Back to feeling slightly hard done by today as Derrick D’Anjou managed to be beaten by a horse that had fallen the day before and the Appleby animal was a short head away from a place return.
And so we kick on to a very special day…….Wednesday……
Down Time appeals here over the longer trip after being the second string in a seller its stable mate won eight days ago over shorter.
Boric is a horse I am convinced is going to win very shortly but Henry Brooke “chooses” Urban Gale of Jo Foster’s and this one finished with a lot in the tank after a quiet Brooke ride at Southwell three weeks ago. The jockey’s presence could be important here today.
Sir Jamie is the horse with all the right credentials in this race and George Downing is jocked up on Carroll’s runner which showed enough two and three starts ago to suggest it can take this today. Its main danger, and a definite bet if better drawn, is The Special One of Ali Brewer’s. This one was a length third at Chelmsford recently and was very obviously stopped by George Wood to finish in that position. Kirby takes over today and if he can “manage” stall ten effectively then The Special One probably wins.
Athletic holds obvious claims on its win at Chelmsford last week from stall two today.
Blackthorn Stick and Indus Valley are the obvious two to concentrate on should the market speak in their favour.
Topmeup will be winning soon and this race may be as good a place to start as any. Egan rides fro Evans and the horse drops back a furlong from its recent runs at Southwell, one when stopped from the front and the most recent where it was stopped from a poor draw behind Chamasay, its stable mate.
The two I would be considering to try and get some value in this are Picansort and Powerful Wind. Both have the ability to win this and if Picansort needs a decent gallop it should get exactly that today with Taajub and Mossgo in opposition.
I’m assuming someone tipped Vallarta yesterday evening due to the price shortening radically which is not Ruth Carr’s style. It is off its last winning mark and had a spin around the track two weeks ago but I would expect a drift at some point, whether or not it is trying today.
Harwoods Star is very nicely treated for Butler with Brock on board but will today be THE day for it?
Muqarred has been put up twelve pounds for its eight length annihilation of Pool House and Greyfriarschorista in a Southwell claimer over this trip but even that will fail to stop it if it is trying today over the same mile trip. It ran over twelve furlongs straight after and that run can be ignored but ths race is tougher with House Of Commons and Hammer Gun to name but two that have a chance of coming out on top.
Karen Tutty has two in this in Novabridge and Under Approval with Gemma riding the former which is more than capable of winning off a mark of 58.
A race in which two “outsiders” can be considered at very nice prices and with the form in the book to entitle them to go close today.
Chris Fairhurst’s Thackeray has been ridden “compassionately” in its last four starts and has shown a liking for this surafec on a couple of those occasions. Becky Smith rides, as she has done previously, and this trip looks to suit.
Crakehall Lad has won over this distance and around this track. It has also won over further on the flat and has not been ridden to feature in recent races. Miss C Walton rides today and Andy Crook’s six year old has been fitted with a hood for the first time which draws the eye.
Coping Stone and Dixie’s Double reoppose today after finishing fourth and fifth over five at Lingfield three weeks ago and I am tempted to declare that Kubler’s horse would not beat Brown’s if both were trying. Finley Marsh is on Brown’s three year old to which first time cheek pieces have been applied although stall nine is not perfect.
Dulcina of McNamara’s is entered again after being withdrawn from a similarly weak contest a few days ago. The market has to be watched in regard to this one’s chances and the same can be said of Kelleway’s Tea El Tee which looks to have a very nice mark of 53 considering a couple of bits of form from last year. Any race which includes both a Kelleway and an Evans runner is worth a second look.
Picket Line is back down to its last winning mark and looked to run a very promising race over a furlong less at Wolves three weeks ago. Murphy is on board for Deacon and stall three may sway them to having a pop at this race today. Seven furlongs is not a didstance it has won over previously but it certainly has the potential to stay the trip well enough to take this if wanted.
Inshaa would also have to be considered from stall seven after running very nicely over six at Newcastle a fortnight ago. Tom Eaves takes over today and the Herrington trained five year old will surely break its maiden tag before long.
Last week I mentioned Chamasay at length but didn’t select it as a bet (I do that a lot) and it won by many lengths pulling a cart and dancing a jig at Southwell under David Egan, although it would have won with half of the members of Cirque Du Soleil clinging to the saddle from what I witnessed. It runs here eight days later without a penalty due to that race being an apprentice handicap but aan eight pound rise is imminent. You would think it would be a certainty today and it may well be but the combination of being drawn in nine and running on a different surface at a skinny price may well be enough to see it being put away and there are others in the race that have been waiting their turn.
Whatalove of Keighley’s has the distinction of having George Wood riding today, a definite step up from Roger Ingram’s daughter, Rhiain. Drawn in five Whatalove has shown up on its last two racecourse visits as a future winner and could well be asked for its effort today.
The horse I have been waiting for, however is Masquerade Bling which has shown itself to be a very well handicapped beast and with the yard slamming in a couple in recent days and this one having a nice berth with Hornby riding again I will take the chance that today is the day.
